Through my paintings I am exploring the formality of architecture, the wear and decay of materials and the transient marks that appear and fade on the surfaces showing different rates of change happening in the same time and place.
I am seeking to show the underlying permanence and persistence of being that survives through the changes of light, weather and transient decoration. My drawings and paintings are built up through successive layers of line, tone and colour which are obliterated, erased and re-drawn to re-create the erosion and renovation of the original subject. A haze of random calligraphy in the drawings represents the difficulty we often have in seeing the original design and purpose of the subject. Sanding and scraping back through layers of textured paint reveals traces of earlier details and forms through an almost archaeological process.
My current Venetian series draws from fading palatial facades, stencilled door numbers and redundant markings on the walls of ancient workspaces. In these I find connection with generations of unnamed people who have shaped the city.
