I am a recent graduate from the University of Huddersfield, graduating with a First BA (Hons) degree in Textiles Crafts, specializing in Embroidery.
My work is a collection of childhood influenced embroidery pieces and drawings, which are translated through a variety of traditional methods and contemporary techniques. Using found and recycled fabrics to add a sense of nostalgia and the concept of storytelling through my textiles, plays an important role to me as an artist. The inspiration for my work comes from a range of things, from old toys to vintage collections, photographs or simply just words and stories. My work is very personal to me and therefore a lot of care and time is put into creating the pieces and adding finishing touches to the presentation of my collections to tie the whole theme together.
My final major project was based on the themes of childhood, storytelling and growing up, in which I produced a range of 3D cardboard, collaged and stitched houses, developing my work, bringing in the idea of a more three-dimensional form, representing an object, which relates back to the reference point of where my drawings stems from.
My drawing is mixed media based, using collage mainly, complimented with simple embroidery techniques. My drawing is key to my practice, my artistic style is unique and an aspect I would like to take further. I am really interested in going into children's illustration and creating a book of some sort, using my mixed-media collage skills as a starting point to develop this passion.
The idea of using memories to influence my work now is an aspect consistent in my practice, bringing the past to the present, by storytelling through stitches is something I intend to explore, as this is the beginning of my artistic journey.
'Meet my sketchbook' project
September 2009
I entered some of my drawing work as part of this 'Meet My Sketchbook' project, and they have featured two pages with my work on, and activities to do that I have put together. The project is to try and encourage the use of sketchbooks in school, something I think is very important as a lot of my work is based in my skecthbooks, then I develop ideas from that. Here is a link to my page... take a look ...
