The interconnected strands of my work streams are drawing and sculpture. I see drawing as being critical to most art practices as it is the connection between the artist and the world outside.
All of my sculptures in steel are the result of drawing made outside in the landscape. I don't work directly from them but use the imprinted memory of the experience of drawing to guide the initial stages of making. Then the spatial considerations, the dialogue or struggle with the material and the formal considerations of the piece take over.
David Smith, the great American Sculptor said, 'Sculpture is a poetic statement of form.' I have tried to make my own poems with steel.
They are domestic sculpture made for average sized rooms. I make the majority to be intimate, but also to have an element of rawness and a sense of scale. Many of these works can be seen as maquettes for larger sculptures like 'monument' shown in the picture.
